Between October and March, most of Europe is either cold, wet, or both. The Mediterranean, Majorca, Ibiza, mainland Spain, drops to temperatures that make a beach holiday unappealing. That's when savvy British holidaymakers look south and west to the destinations that keep the sunshine going all year round.
The good news is that several excellent winter sun destinations are within a four-hour flight of the UK, served by direct routes from Manchester, Birmingham, Gatwick, Stansted, Liverpool and most other major airports. You don't need to travel halfway around the world to escape the grey.
1. Tenerife, The UK's Favourite Winter Escape

Tenerife is the undisputed king of British winter sun holidays. The south of the island, resorts like Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, enjoys more than 300 sunny days a year, and January temperatures hover around a very comfortable 20°C. The sea is still warm enough to swim well into November.
What makes Tenerife so popular isn't just the weather, it's the sheer variety. You can spend a week on the beach, explore Mount Teide (the highest peak in Spain), visit charming old towns like La Orotava, or simply find a sun lounger and switch off entirely. There's a huge range of accommodation from budget apartments to five-star all-inclusive resorts, which means it works for couples, families and solo travellers alike.
Best months to visit: November through to March, crowds are manageable and prices are lower than peak summer.
Who it's best for: Families, couples, sun-seekers of all ages. Excellent infrastructure, English widely spoken.
2. Gran Canaria, Sun, Sand and Spectacular Dunes

Gran Canaria's southern resort strip, Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, Puerto Rico, is one of Europe's most reliably sunny spots in winter. The famous Maspalomas sand dunes stretching down to the sea are one of the most dramatic natural settings you'll find on a beach holiday anywhere in Europe.
Gran Canaria tends to attract a slightly more independent crowd than Tenerife, it's popular with naturists, LGBTQ+ travellers, hikers and those who want to explore beyond the resort. The island's interior is lush and mountainous, with a very different character to the coastal strip. Las Palmas in the north is a proper Spanish city worth a day trip.
Best months to visit: October to March. The south of the island gets much more sun than the north in winter.

3. Lanzarote, Volcanic Landscapes and Year-Round Sun

Lanzarote has a personality all its own. It's simultaneously otherworldly and deeply relaxing.
Puerto del Carmen is the main resort, with a long sandy beach and excellent watersports. Playa Blanca in the south is quieter and more upmarket. Puerto Calero is where you'll find the marina and more boutique options. The island is compact enough to explore fully in a week, with the Timanfaya National Park and the César Manrique sites well worth a day each.
Lanzarote gets slightly less rain than the other Canary Islands in winter, making it arguably the most reliable for sunshine even in January and February.

4. Fuerteventura, Europe's Best Beaches

The island is also the windsurfing and kitesurfing capital of Europe, the consistent Atlantic trade winds make conditions ideal. Even if you're not into watersports, the wind keeps the heat from ever becoming oppressive, which some visitors find much more comfortable than the sometimes stifling heat of summer in southern Spain.
Fuerteventura tends to be slightly cheaper than Tenerife or Gran Canaria, making it a good choice for budget-conscious travellers who still want quality beaches.
5. Madeira, The Flower Island (and Year-Round Paradise)

Madeira is technically a Portuguese island, but in terms of accessibility from the UK and its appeal as a winter sun destination, it belongs in any list alongside the Canaries. It's greener and more mountainous, hence the "Flower Island" nickname, and considerably more dramatic in its scenery.
Funchal, the capital, is a sophisticated and walkable city with excellent restaurants, a famous cable car and the world-renowned New Year's Eve fireworks display (book flights well in advance if you want to be there for that). The levada walks, irrigation channel paths that traverse the island's dramatic interior, attract serious hikers from across Europe.
Madeira is increasingly popular with digital nomads and longer-stay visitors attracted by the mild year-round climate and relatively low cost of living. For holidaymakers, it offers a genuinely different experience to a typical beach resort.
Best months to visit: April–June and September–November for the best balance of weather and value. Winter is mild but can be wetter.
6. Cape Verde, Atlantic Warmth on a Budget

Cape Verde is the underrated gem of the Atlantic. An archipelago of ten islands off the coast of West Africa, it offers genuine tropical warmth, 24–27°C in winter, without the long-haul flight time of the Caribbean. The island of Sal is the most popular with British holidaymakers, with its long beach at Santa Maria served by direct flights from several UK airports.
Boa Vista, the second most visited island, has arguably even better beaches, the kind of wide, deserted white-sand expanses that you'd normally associate with somewhere much further afield. The wind can be strong (it's popular with watersports enthusiasts), but in winter months it's usually manageable.
Cape Verde is excellent value. All-inclusive deals are widely available and often very competitive, and the local culture, a fascinating blend of African and Portuguese influences, gives the islands a character that generic Mediterranean resorts simply can't match.
7. Egypt (Hurghada / Sharm el-Sheikh), Red Sea Sunshine

Egypt's Red Sea resorts offer winter sunshine that's a notch warmer than the Canaries, exceptional snorkelling and diving, and all-inclusive deals that are hard to beat on price. Hurghada on the mainland and Sharm el-Sheikh on the Sinai Peninsula are purpose-built resort towns with large hotels, water parks and direct beach access.
The Red Sea's calm, clear waters make it one of the best places in the world for beginner divers and snorkellers, the coral reefs are spectacular and the marine life abundant. Sharm has a more cosmopolitan feel with a wider range of restaurants and nightlife options.

How to Get the Best Price on Winter Sun Holidays
- Book early for Christmas and New Year, these dates sell out and prices spike. Book by September for peak festive travel.
- Be flexible on departure airport, prices from Manchester, Birmingham or East Midlands are often significantly different for the same week.
- Mid-week departures save money, Tuesday and Wednesday departures are typically the cheapest days to fly.
